Back to school…just keep learning!

It’s a great time of year, kids are back in school, fall in the air, football, apples, and more.  Have you ever heard someone say, “if I could go back to my 20’s and know what I know now.”?  No doubt we would likely make some different choices or certainly have more fun.

Those choices would not necessarily be better ones, but different ones.  It’s an interesting thought though.  What if we looked back in our businesses today and asked the question, “what would I do knowing what I do today?”

Months or years ago, we decided to …but today we know that change was fraught with a variety of unfortunate collateral issues.  We have addressed most but…  Have you experienced this?

As leaders and humans, we tend to let our egos get in the way.  We will continue down a path despite the lack of results, because we are afraid of reversing a decision. Now I am going to tell you a secret.  Learn these four key words, “I MADE A MISTAKE”.  Verbalize those words and start leveraging everything you learned including what you would do differently.  You will be surprised at how those around you respond to your honesty in an impactful way.

All too often we are forced in business to make decisions with a limited set of data and or input from others that is opinion based.  Realize that admitting mistakes is a sign of strength not weakness and is greatly respected by the people we lead.  Once we own it, we can address it and adjust the course of action typically leading to better results and an improved culture.  Try it!  What decision would you change knowing what you know now?

Enjoy this great season of fall!  Watch some football, have some cider and donuts, and keep learning.
